DISNEY, PHILLY SPORTS, ZELDA, THE CLASSICS, & BROADWAY THIS JULY & AUGUST

PHILADELPHIA  (July 16, 2013) – The Mann’s 2013 Summer Orchestra Series continues in July and August with seven concerts that celebrate distinct genres of entertainment paired with Philadelphia’s finest classical musicians.  The Mann Center for the Performing Arts is proud to present Disney’s Fantasia Live in Concert; Symphonic Sports-tacular with After Show Fireworks; The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses-Second Quest with new music and video; From Russian Romance to Revolution; Van Cliburn: A Tribute; and closing the series is Michael Feinstein & Friends all with the incomparable Philadelphia Orchestra.

 

“We’re continuing to unite and expand audiences by pairing world-class orchestras with subjects that people are passionate about,” says Catherine M. Cahill, CEO and President of the Mann.  “Each concert is crafted around material that’s been a game changer in its respective genre, from Nintendo’s Zelda to the great American songbook to the greatest moments in Philadelphia sports.  We’re retelling some of the best stories of all time, along with much of the best music of all time.”

 

TUESDAY, JULY 23:  Disney’s Fantasia Live in Concert with The Philadelphia Orchestra

Join us for a thrilling performance of Walt Disney’s groundbreaking marriage of symphonic music and animation, Fantasia. Magnificent repertoire from the original 1940 version and Fantasia 2000, including selections from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, “Dance of the Hours” and The Nutcracker, will be performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra more than 70 years after the orchestra, under the direction of Leopold Stokowski, recorded the original soundtrack for the Disney film.  With Fantasia movie clips shown on the big screen, this concert promises a revival of childhood favorites for parents and a new experience to be shared with children of all ages.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 24:  Symphonic Sports-tacular with The Philadelphia Orchestra with

NEW PRE-SHOW SPORTS-A-RAMA & After Show Fireworks

Philadelphia sports take center stage at the Mann this summer when the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, and Union join forces with the Fabulous Philadelphians for the world premiere of Symphonic Sports-tacular.  Hosted by the "Voice of the Eagles," Merrill Reese, the concert showcases Philly’s best sports moments on giant video screens set to classical music's greatest hits.  The evening will also feature a Parade of Stars featuring many of the region’s youth athletes and a special appearance by Philadelphia sportscaster, Michael Barkann, along with the hilarious broadcast of Beethoven's 5th by  PDQ Bach’s Peter Schickele.  Show starts at 8 p.m.

 

SPORTS-A-RAMA   6-7:45  p.m.

Be a part of the concert’s “pre-game” activities during Sports-A-Rama at the Mann from 6-7:45 p.m. on July 24.  “We want this show to have a great spectator experience for both music and sports fans,” said Catherine Cahill, President & CEO of the Mann.  “So, just like you would at our Philly stadiums and arenas, come early for some pre-game fun at the Mann!” 

 

Meet representatives from the Philadelphia Phillies, Sixers, Union, Flyers and Eagles on and around the Mann’s great lawn.  Ham it up with the Phillie Phanatic and the Eagles’ Swoop mascot.  Get an autograph from Phils’ great, Greg Luzinski.  Practice your football pass and soccer goal shot in huge inflatable displays. Be on the look out for giveaways from the Flyers Fun Patrol. Watch the Sixers’ Flight Squad perform amazing acrobatics.  Then grab a Dollar Dog, settle in for the concert hosted by Merrill Reese, and stay for the after-show fireworks. Fun for the whole family!

The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses returns to the Mann by popular demand with an exciting new scenes and music! Expect breathtaking, new visuals exploring additional chapters from the Zelda franchise as well as the beautifully orchestrated four-movement symphony recounting the classic storylines from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

THURSDAY, AUG. 1: Van Cliburn: A Tribute with The Philadelphia Orchestra

The late American pianist Van Cliburn had a long and cherished relationship with Philadelphia audiences and our great orchestra. We pay tribute to his memory and his musical legacy by presenting the very first orchestra engagement by the Grand Prize winner of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, an event close to Mr. Cliburn’s heart. You’ll be among the first to applaud this new talent after the announcement of the winners in June. Thrill to one of the great Romantic piano concertos and orchestral music beloved by Mr. Cliburn as Cristian Macelaru leads the Philadelphia Orchestra in this special concert.
