Mary J. Blige and D'Angelo
The Liberation Tour starring "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul", Mary J. Blige, acclaimed neo-soul singer-songwriter D'Angelo, and special guest Melanie Fiona comes to the Mann Friday, August 24th.
Mary J. Blige is a nine time Grammy Award-winner. The singer's inspirational voice and break-through style have also earned her ten Billboard Awards, eight multi-platinum albums, six NAACP Image Awards, four American Music Awards, four BET Awards, an MTV Music Video Award, and two Golden Globe nominations. In 2004 Mary J. Blige formed her own label, Matriarch Records, under the umbrella of Interscope and in 2007 co-founded the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN), whose mission is to empower women for all walks of life to reach their full individual potential. She recently served as a guest mentor on Season 11 of American Idol and starred in the film adaptation of Broadway the Tony-nominated musical, Rock of Ages with Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Alec Baldwin.
Multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist D'Angelo is fresh off a European tour in which he debuted four new songs: "Sugah Daddy," "The Charade," "Ain't that Easy," and "In Another Life," his first new solo material since 2000. D'Angelo also recently made an unannounced appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival as part of the Superjam lead by Questlove. D'Angelo has two Grammy Awards, one American Music Award, and three Soul Train Music Awards to his name.
With the release of The Bridge, Melanie Fiona emerged as one of 2009’s finest new breakout stars. The album’s breakthrough ballad, “It Kills Me,” topped Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for nine weeks and earned Fiona her first Grammy nomination in 2010 for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance. The MF Life, the Canadian songstress's second album for SRC/Title 9/Universal Motown was released this past March for which Fiona praised by The Boston Globe "co-[writing] nearly all of the songs and often [delivering] them with stunning clarity and power."
